“I want to share my business journey to inspire other women to believe in themselves, follow their dreams and reach for the stars
Well-known property broker Doreen Katzen is confirmed as a speaker at Women in Business Seminar 2016 taking place on 6 July 2016 at Emoyeni Estate in Parktown, Johannesburg. “I want to share my business journey to inspire other women to believe in themselves, follow their dreams and reach for the stars. Being an entrepreneur has its ups and its downs.
I want to give over my lessons on how to persevere, teaching others that there is no such thing as failure – it is only feedback which can be used to improve one’s efforts and oneself going forward. I would like to share how one can make decisions consciously in order to create more opportunities in life to make a difference to one’s family and community,” says Katzen.
“We are really excited to have Doreen Katzen in our lineup of speakers and believe that her experience and heart will go a long way in inspiring the women who will attend Women in Business Seminar 2016,” says Karabo Keepile, Managing Director of Nasedi Media & Communications – event organisers of Women in Business Seminar 2016.
When Doreen Katzen qualified as a nursery school teacher, her entrepreneurial spirit spurred her to open her own private nursery school on Libanon Mine in Westonaria. “This was a successful venture that gave me experience in creating structures and systems in order to streamline the running of the school,” recalls Katzen, a valuable skill that would prove useful in later careers.
A couple of years later Katzen and her family moved to Johannesburg and together with her husband she undertook a new business pursuit manufacturing and distributing uniforms for nurses and paramedics for 25 years. Managing a staff compliment of 120 people across the factory and retail outlets forced Katzen to enhance her strategizing skills in order to grow the business further. “It also helped to highlight the importance of service and keeping your word, something which I’ve carried into my current position at Vered Estates.
In her current position at Vered Estates, as a property broker, Katzen believes every single career she has followed over the years has prepared her for the property industry where providing assistance and solutions are essential to excellent service. “Other skills and qualities which I have acquired along the way are confidence, ability to make decisions and being able to understand the needs of people, which all play a vital role in enabling me to create a win-win situation for all concerned,” adds Katzen.
With 16 years’ experience in the property market, Katzen is recognised as an industry expert and has won numerous accolades as a result of her work. But it’s her dedication to serve others that has set her apart.
“A highlight has been playing a role in uplifting others and providing support through my volunteer work for 7 years at Life Line and 11 years at the then 702 help line and Crisis Centre. I was also involved in assisting in a marriage guidance capacity for engaged couples for two years. This work was very rewarding in terms of having one-on-one encounters and being able to make a difference by helping people on an individual level,” adds Katzen.
The mother of four and grandmother to her grandchildren is well aware of the challenges that come with entrepreneurship while balancing the different roles she holds as a women in business.
